I Did Me Some Calorimetry

Yay! Its allowing me to post finally!

So I was entranced by the new Knitty's Calorimetry, so I decided to give it a go.

I love it, but here are some thoughts about the whole thing:
  • It doesn't tell you what weight the yarn is. I'm not usually in the habit of doing swatches for headgear, I just sort of cast on and pray. After a little looking up, I found out that the pattern called for yarn is classified as heavy worsted so I was able to substitute some KnitPicks Shamrock (my favoritest yarn ever) which is also heavy worsted.
  • The pattern says to CO 120 stitches. If you look over at Craftster they are having a discussion about how ginormously alot this seems.... and they're right. I Cast on twice, and frogged twice because it was seeming so freaky huge. Alot of girls (including me) over at Craftster are doing 80 stitches instead of 120 and its working out fine since its a really stretchy 2x2 rib. One girl knit hers with the 120 and ended up having to add a second button (a la double breasted jacket kinda deal) and over wrap it. Maybe if I was the kind of person who sports dreadies the 120 might work, as it is I'm not so it didn't.
  • It was a rather quick knit, and that's with me being crawled all over by 3 kids constantly. For someone with knitting oompa loompas stashed in their closet, they should be able to pound this out in a manner of a couple of hours.
  • It looks cooler than the ever popular Panta (you may have to go thru a couple of pages of comments to get to the translated pattern and pictures... older posts are encouraged to remove pictures to give more speed to the site). I like the button for some reason... it endears the Calorimetry to me.
Overall, I liked it, and will probably knit another. As you can see, to take a pic I stylized it to look like an unhappy mouth- I don't know why.

Sounds like a pattern that could use some help. Good for you for sticking with it.

Let's try this again.... It ate my first comment.
The pattern seemed fine, really. Except for the lack of yarn weight, it pretty much had everything right there. Thing is, the yarn called for in the pattern is Filatura di Crosa 127 Print. I have never ever used that yarn. Maybe its less elastic than my KnitPicks Shamrock (or the yarns the girls over at Craftster are using) and the CO 120 is totally warranted?
Its the only idea I could come up with.

Well, I made some Pantas and loved them. Problem is...I have ultra short hair and anything going under my hair makes it stick straight out and look funny.

*sigh* Guess I'll stick to hats. But that looks like an awesome thing to knit for gifts!

I used to have super short hair too and know your pain. I always opted for bucket hats.
