My very pathetic first try

It all started when Sassy gave me a knit dish cloth for Christmas. I really like it. So recently I decided I needed some new ones so that I could have more dish cloths to wash with while the first one is being washed. I made a plain raspberry one but then decided I'd try a skull.

I've never done intarsia before and (stupidly) I didn't bother looking up directions. I figured I'd just tie on my other-colored yarn and go. I had the vague impression that I was supposed to be carrying the yarn across the back of the cloth, but being a dish cloth, I didn't want to have extra bits of yarn to snag. So...I didn't do that part and sadly my cloth 1) has holes in it and 2) I messed up the counting or something becasue he looks like his jaw is displaced or something. sad.

I am not defeated! I will try again! And maybe this time I'll read some directions...

It's not too terrible. Not bad for a first try. The key is to twist the colors along the back, as you knit. It prevents holes...Try again. It takes practice...and I am still practising myself. LOL!

The back of intarsia rarely ever looks pretty, seriously. Its awesome for a first try though, go you!

You could try this one next time:

or this one:

And leave out the color change

I'm eyeing the squirrel one from here myself:

We'll not speak of my first intarsia attempt.... just... just... no.
:D

I have only ever had one go and THAT wont be seeing the light of day ever. Yours is great - he looks like he is going "Arrrgh me hearties!"

I like the funky jaw. It makes him look tough. :-) For a first try, it's great!

Looks like he's saying "Arrr!"

Where is the pattern from? I was just looking for an easy skull & crossbones. My 3 yr old is seriously in love w/ Captain Jack Sparrow.

Not bad for first attempt at intarsia. I have one that was a wreck and I ended up doing something like unraveling it, throwing it away, or just let it get lost with other things. It'll pop up one day and haunt me. I'm still trying to make intarsia look good at the back.

Eden, I've met lots of kids who are in love with Jack Sparrow, so it's nothing out of the norm and I think it's cute. They even refer to the actor as that. Its kinda funny.

I have one of those - its a skull too! Last spring Interweave Knits had a great tutorial on intarsia and the backs still aren't pretty. Each time I try, it gets better - I am sure it will be the same for you! Someday you will look back on this one and giggle! (Or at least that is what I keep telling myself....)

Thanks for the encouragement, guys. For those who asked, I think the chart I used was the "skully charts" on the left under "awesome knit charts"....but I'm not sure b/c I can't see it at work. :-(

Hey, it's really not bad for your 1st attempt. We've all been there & done that as far as Intarsia is concerned. I can't tell you how many times I ripped out my 1st attempt. You were just brave enough to show yours.
I even happen to love doing Intarsia now & I can tell you that I loathed it until I figured out the twist & carrying the colours properly. Geesh girl, give yourself more credit.
