here's a baby blanket for some friends of mine. Its done in miter squares out of Lionbrand Homespun with a crochet border.

That's awesome! You should make little checkers out of fabric a polyfill (stuffie checkers!) to go with. That way, if the baby outgrows the blanket, there's still fun to be had.
